TaTEDO-SESO and SESCOM are in the process of supporting the transition to electromobility (e-mobility) through electric three-wheelers to contribute to the efforts of replacing the fossil fuel three-wheelers in the city of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. E-three-wheelers are priority in combating climate change and transitioning to e-mobility because they are considered to be the fastest-growing mode of transportation in growing economies.

TaTEDO-SESO and SESCOM started by retrofitting fossil fuel three-wheelers and changing three of them into electric three-wheelers. This was followed by importing and assembling other twenty electric three-wheelers.    The assembled three-wheelers have similar driving characteristics to the current fossil-fuel three-wheelers, the only change is in the powering system.

The number of electric three-wheelers is increasing in public transport and it is convenient transportation for passengers since they are affordable and noise- or pollution-free transport. It is vital to investigate the prospects that electric three-wheelers possess to facilitate a robust integration in public transport. These vehicles play a significant role in transport for short distances and intra-city transport systems in almost all major and minor cities in Bangladesh. They fill the gap created because of either the lack of conventional public transport or their substandard performance. These vehicles have low operating and initial costs resulting in a pretty reasonable fare for the riders, and passengers can have their desired noiseless and smoke-free journey.

SESCOM electric three-wheelers can carry up to six people at a time. Sharing the ride is one of the distinctive features that may make this transport more popular, as it reduces per-head fare for the passengers.  They have also become a viable source of employability for many people.

Conventional fossil fuel three-wheelers are considered a significant source of greenhouse gases leading to global warming.  With rapid urbanization, motorization is increasing, causing significant city air pollution.  Thus, environmentally friendly transport is imperative to the health of hundreds of millions who dwell in densely packed cities like Dar es Salaam.  Therefore, E3Ws can be considered a potential solution, as they use electricity for charging and are free from emissions. They consume less energy than their fossil fuel counterparts while providing similar performance with the same weight. Besides being environmentally friendly, electric three-wheelers are more economical than any other three-wheelers in public transport.

For anyone willing to become an innovator by trying electric three-wheelers, come and visit SESCOM offices at Goba, Dar es Salaam. It is time to become greener innovators in the transport sector by trying to invest in electric three-wheelers.
